The conclusion in the recommendation is that Beta will employ Alpha's
former workers to increase its competitive advantages. To support the
conclusion, the author provides that facts that Alpha Company has lay
off 15% of its employees and encouraging workers to retire early. However,
close scrutiny reveals that these facts lend little credible support to the author's conclusion.
In the first place, the author assumes that Beta will suffer from same fate
if Beta employs Alpha's workers. The reason given by the author is that both
of Beta and Alpha manufacture similar production. However, no other evidence
is provided to support this reasoning line. I have a reason to suspect that
since Beta produce similar productions to Alpha, Beta can get successful experience
of Alpha. The argument is clearly problematic. Without providing more information
about the connection between Beta and Alpha, the author cannot get the conclusion reasonably.
Second, even if it is granted that Beta and Alpha are similar, the author seems to assume
that by employing Alpha's workers, Beta can get valuable information about Alpha. The author
holds the view that employees of Alpha surely have a information about Alpha. Nor any evidence
is supplied to prove the view. As a result, I have a good reason to suspect. It is possible that
employees of Alpha is fired or retired because the Alpha does not need them. These employees
have high possibilities to can not provide valuable information. Unless the author can supply
more information or reasonable explanation about Alpha's workers who leaves Alpha Company, the
argument is ill-founded.
Finally, it is strange that when Alpha focus on downsizing, Beta wants to increase employment to
gain competitive position. Because it is possible that recession cause Alpha has to downsize.
If Beta increase employment, it will suffer lose, contrary to its expectation.
In sum, it is imprudent for the author draws this conclusion simply on the basis of these faces
presented. The solidify the argument, the author has to rule out that Beta and Alpha are analogy
on production similarity. In addition, the author should realize that there is a possibility
that worker of Alpha may have not a valuable information about Alpha. Also, the above mentioned
possibilities should be considered when come to the conclusion.
