The issue of whether public service should be required for all citizens to perform is complex and
controversial. Different people may hold different opinions due to respective angles. As far as
I am concerned, I partially agree with the author that service would do well to not only whole
country but also individual. However, the authors fails to figure out mandatory public service
also has negative effects on society and participants. My position depends on deep and fundamental
analysis as discussed below.
On one hand, there is no denying that public service would benefit whole country. After requiring
all citizens perform public service, more human resource could be involved in some areas where
little people is willing to participate some dirty and boring tasks. A good example is founded
in the case that there are little people paid attention to single old male or female with low
revenue. These people have ever contributed to the society when they were young, but now have
suffered from diseases without family members’ company. If no public service is required to help
these people, they would feel unfair and no more other people would like to make effort to build
our society and provide public service. Moreover, without experiencing service public, people
would not treasure equipment and resource supplied by government. Therefore, mandatory public
service would facilitate our society to be harmony.
On the other hand, individuals actually would be benefited from public service. Through
participating voluntary work, soul of people could be purified. People would feel free and relax
to communicate with others and release pressure of their job. Public service makes people to
realize the duty of community and to have more possibility to help people who indeed need help,
realizing value of life.
However, that is not to say, required public service has no negative influence. There is
possible the required service is contrary to a person’s interest and human rights. What’s more,
efficiency comes from division of work. If all citizens carried on similar job, time is consumed
but no more work achievements would be gained by people. Furthermore, the author seems to ignore
additional cost from managing public service and negotiation. It is obvious that some
disadvantages are companied by several advantages.
In sum, public service should be encouraged to perform by all citizens, because it benefits both
society and participators. However, we should not neglect that required service has some
drawbacks we need to confront, such as limitation on individual, additional costs and efficiency
of community.
