In today's fast developing world, people with a broad knowledge of many
academic subjects will absolutely be favored. There is a famous saying
“Knowledge is power.” The broader knowledge we have, the better we live.
So I strongly believe that the benefits of having broad knowledge of various
subjects greatly overweigh the advantages of having specialized knowledge.
The reasons are following.
First, having a broad knowledge is useful in our daily life. When we meet
some practical problems in everyday life, knowing knowledge of various subjects
will help us a lot. Consider one day there is a small problem occurs in the
circuits of your television, if you have a basic understanding of electricity,
then you might identify the problem and solve it without any help from others.
The problems we meet in life can't be related to just one subject, so it is
absolutely better if we have a broader wide range of knowledge.
For another critical point, a person with knowledge of various subjects is more
favored in hunting for jobs. A manager would probably like to hire an employee
with more understanding in addition to his or her expertise. For a computer
engineer, if he or she has a good understanding in marketing and company management,
it would be better for the company to produce a software which meets the needs
of market. According a survey by a marketing journal, after polling hundreds of
staff of human resource, about 90 percent of the respondents claim that they would
probably hire a person with a broad knowledge background.
There is another reason. Having knowledge of many academic subjects would help us
interpret some scientific phenomenon better. There is a perfect example which can
back up my point of view. In a biology experiment, scientists must have to observe
some phenomenon to draw some conclusions. But if the scientists have some knowledge
of statistics and computer science, they could use the computer to tackle the data
and calculate accurate mathematical result, then analyze the result with the knowledge
of statistics. They will surely conclude precise and more convincing results.
According the several points of view I propose above, we can easily get the conclusion
having a broad knowledge of various subjects is better than having a specific field of
knowledge. People with broad knowledge will sure be more competitive than others in
hunting for jobs, and live easier than others.
