One of the most famous scientific geniuses Albert Einstein, has said that his education is the
only thing that has hindered his pursuit of knowledge. Most believe that he was referring to the
rigidity of the education system that is counterproductive to inducing change that is necessary
for important discoveries. I partially agree with his opinion but still believe that a basic
education is paramount to learning.
Most education systems around the world are orthodox in their methods and ways. This means
that they are reluctant in accepting new ideas that may otherwise aid learning. This may be
what Einstein experienced in his career in science when he saw new ideas being opposed to on
the basis of orthodox views. This accusation is not without merit as many important scientific
discoveries have been rejected for this reason since antiquity. Galileo’s hypothesis that the
earth revolved around the sun for instance was rejected for centuries despite ample evidence.
On the other hand, I do think a basic education is what provides a person with the tools they
need in order to learn and further such efforts. Without a sound knowledge of rudimentary
mathematics, language and the humanities, one cannot efficiently learn or discover new
knowledge. This is especially true for the average person who has not the exceptional
intelligence that Einstein possesses.
In brief, while I do see the merit in Einstein’s views of education hindering learning,
I still feel
that an education is necessary for people to learn effectively.
