Lifeline of a Nation: Exploring Solutions for Water Scarcity

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, it's my honor to give a speech today on Exploring
Solutions for Water Scarcity in People's Republic of China.
China is a big country. But China is also a country of water scarcity, because of the huge popula
tion. Our water supply per person is 2300 cubic meters, only one fourth of the world's average.
Water scarcity is both a natural and a human-made problem. There is enough freshwater on the planet
for all the people, but it is distributed unevenly and too much of it is wasted and polluted.
This is also what happened in China. We have more water in the South than in the North,
and more and more surface water are polluted and unusable.
It's time for us to change the situation. In China, the government has begun to use seawater to
flush toilets in many coastal cities. More and more water-saving products were invented and used
in our daily life. But I think it is also important to educate people to change the consumption
and lifestyles. For example, we should take short shower instead of bath; turn of the tap water
when not using; wash the car less often, and so on. There is still enough water for all of us - but
only so long as we keep it clean, use it more wisely, and share it fairly.
