Khao San Road is a street in central Bangkok. It is only one kilometer long, but is one of the most
famous streets in Asia. Over the last 20 years or so, Khao San Road has become the place to visit
for tourists and backpackers from around the world. In the novel “The Beach” it was described as
the center of the backpacking universe! Not many people who visit there would argue with that
description. On this short street there are so many small hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, shops,
stalls, and bars. In addition, there are also several places for tired travelers to get a relaxing
massage.
What makes Khao San Road that little bit more special is the relaxed atmosphere. It has a party
feel to it, and everyone you see walking down the street seems to enjoy the experience. In the
evening, the noise starts to increase as the parties begin. The music gets louder and the laughter
spills out onto the street. In recent years, more famous companies such as 7-Eleven and
McDonald’s have started to open stores there. Not everyone is happy with this though. They are
worried that if too many big stores open, Khao San Road will lose its magical feeling.
