Should teachers be obligated to upgrade their knowledge an expertise every once in a while?
I believe so. An educator that keeps teaching tha same old stuff, especially if it is already
outdated and even errosneous, is simply being completly irresponsible to students, to herself
and even to the whole society.
For starter, the nature of the teacher's occupation requires an extraordinary amount of integrity.
If you're consciously aware that you're teaching something uncertain, it is in effect a violation
of the teacher's code of ethics. In other words, being responsible for students requires that
teachers continually renew their own knowledge and expertise. I was fortunate enough to be guided
during college by a tremendously inspiring teacher, Professor Pruss.
Given the nature of my discipline, philosophy, its knowledge does not undergo rapid changes, at
least not as much as that of, say, computer science. Still, papers are published every day, and
provocative discourses are ongoing all the time. Being in Pruss's class, I got to be a part of
those discourses. For instance, when he was lecturing on the ancient topic of mind-body duality,
he would not only introduce us to the very classic dissertation from Descartes, but also fresh our
mind with ongoing debates, ones that incorpotare the latest discoveries from mordern neurology and
behavior psychology, something most other philosophy teachers rarely bothered to learn about.
This pedagogy was of immense help to us , in that if helped us link the topic to our own
reserch projects at hand. It made something archaic current.
However, if a teacher refreshes her teaching material, the biggest beneficiary is not her students,
but herself. In today's academic world, the teaching job is far less stable than it used to be.
Young scholars have to work extremely hard to secure their positions. Students give out evaluations
by the end of each course, and those neglecting such feedback are often at the risk of losing their
own jobs. I can cite a negative example from my high school experience. During my sophomore year,
I had a physical teacher Mr.Gray. He was not good. Besides talking about high school physics,
he often elaborated on advanced particle physics, things we didn't exactly have to know. We didn't
hate digressionm expect ones that were obviously untrue. He kept on talking about how the foundation
of mordern physics was still on shaky ground because its foundation still had one missing piece
left, the Higgs Boson. What he didn't know but what we all knew was that this last particle was
already discovered several years ago, because it was everywhere on the news. I guess the students
were very nice not to point out that erro directly to his face, but we were not that nice since we
clearly all gave him a poor evaluation by the end of the term. Some of us even wrote down quite
straightforward remarks saying that this teacher had his basic expertise missing and was probaly
barely qualified for elementary school. To make a long sad story short, he got fired.
In conclusion, in this moedern competitive world, we students are fighting hard to gain a
competitive edge in the society an teacher and teachers have the obligation to provide us with
adequate resource. Those that fail to update their knowledge, I believe, are clearly not up to this
task and should have their job taken away.
