With the multimedia developing increasingly faster in the modern society, people are
exposed to abundant information and has the desire to get well-informed.
Recently, the issue whether a person must get information from many different news
resources in order to be well-informed has been widely debated.
A fair portion of people deem that skimming information from many sources is a waste
of time while others hold an opposite point of view, believing that viewing news from
different sources is beneficial.
From my perspective, I side with the latter one.
Initially, it is nearly impossible for a news report to contain all the details and
the whole background.
Since some pieces of news from some sources leave out some information, and others leave
out other information, a reader can grasp a lot more information about a case by reading
reports from multiple sources, constructing a more complete image of the new in his or her mind.
For instance, once it was reported that a father wrote some moving articles, advocating
people to donate money for his sick daughter while another news report mentioned that this man
already owned three houses in Shenzhen, China.
Only from both of the reports can we establish a multi-faceted impression on the story.
In this way, a person had better view news from more resources.
Furthermore, the viewpoint of one single article has great proclivity to be influenced by the
ideology of a country or a group. As the saying goes, each coin has two sides.
Since the news reported by one media is prone to be single-faceted, one can certainly get more
information and opinions by reading news reports from different sources, especially reports from
different countries.
We can quote a common example.
Once China and Japan had a collision on whether an island belongs to China or Japan.
Reporters in Japan listed some reasons that supported the idea that the island belongs to Japan
and those articles tried their best to convince the readers of their own opinion.
However, news reports written by Chinese people listed other evidence which proved that the island
belongs to China.
Accordingly, a viewer needs to gain information from both countries and then compare the articles
in order to form his or her own understanding.
In conclusion, I agree with the idea that only after learning information from multiple resources
can a person get close to the truth because a single news report may leave out some information and
only hold a specific perspective.
